Ernest H. Robl: Photographer or writer?

People sometimes ask me whether I am

As someone who started in daily news coverage, where I used both photography and writing to tell a story, I prefer to consider myself a journalist who uses the best available means to communicate. Some stories can best be told with words; some can best be told with photographs. Some require a combination.

Even the best photographs usually require at least a few words to give them context—to let the viewer know what he or she is looking at and why the content of the photo is relevant to them. Many clients who see me primarily as a photographer have expressed appreciation for the thoroughness of the captions that I provide.

Some clients prefer to hire me to do one type of work or another. And, that's fine, if they feel that my photographic or writing style matches what they want to communicate.

But I also enjoy projects—exemplified by my commercially and self-published books and numerous magazine features—where I can tell a story with both my abilities.

Therefore, my Web site contains examples of both types of work. If your organization uses both photography and writing, I hope you will give consideration to my work in both areas. (The Web site itself serves as an example of my ability to combine pictures and words.)

If you'd like to see additional samples beyond those offered on my Web site, including tearsheets of articles or photo essays perhaps more relevant to your audience, give me a call. I can usually provide the appropriate material.

This site includes examples of travel features as well text excerpts (sample chapters) from all of my self-published books.
