My stock photo collection is best known for its coverage of railroads, which has appeared in encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines, and many other publications. It has even been used by railroad officials for photo decor display prints.
I have two Web pages (also available as printed sheets) dedicated to just providing an overview of the railroad subjects, so, here, I'll just mention the following points:
However, coverage of transportation extends far beyond railroads to other modes: Stock photos are available depicting a variety of surface and air transport operations -- and some related military transportation activities.
Coverage is available for all of the following, with a brief section later devoted to each category:
Intermodalism -- equipment that can be used by more than one transport mode -- is the fastest growing area of transportation.
My coverage includes not only the use of containers for a combination of highway, rail, and ocean movements, but also such intermodal equipment as RoadRailer® units, which can be used as either highway trailers or coupled together into trains.
Both large and smaller intermodal terminals in the U.S. and Europe are included.
Intermodal containers are shown being transported on trains and on the highways. Standard highway trailers loaded on intermodal trains are also featured. Included are generic trailers and those of major trucking companies.
Ocean coverage includes harbors in such cities as Seattle, Wash.; Oakland, Calif.; Norfolk, Va.; and Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. Container ships are featured but other facilities are also included. (And: Coastal lighthouses in North Carolina.)
River transport subjects include tows of barges with both bulk commodities and intermodal containers. A sequence shows a tow going through a lock on the Columbia River. I also have photos of freight barges on the Seine River in Paris.
Airport coverage includes large and small aircraft being serviced at airports, commercial aircraft in flight -- and related military subjects.
Denver's new, distinctive, and controversial Denver International Airport (DIA) is represented with interiors and exteriors. (New material, 1995.)
Cargo handling equipment and cargo aircraft from several major air freight lines, including FedEx, United Parcel Service, Emery, and Burlington Air Express, are available in strong horizontals and verticals. (New material, 1995.)
Trucks are featured in a variety of scenic settings. Subjects include both standard tractor-trailer combinations and tractors hauling intermodal containers on a chassis.
Photos from the U.S. and Europe allow a comparison of highway transport in America and Europe.
Described in more detail on my railroad sheets are a variety of rail-based transit systems in cities in the U.S. and Europe:
A variety of historic railway (and other transportation) equipment is depicted in transportation museums and in other historic settings.
Finally, don't forget that many transportation subjects are depicted in scenic settings and that these images would also work in the context of regional coverage or with travel pieces.
Keeping the stock collection up to date and expanding coverage is an ongoing project.
My color advertising sheets, Stock Photo Update newsletters, and overview sheets (like this one) only provide a few examples of the available coverage. (My Stock Photo Update newsletter, mailed out at irregular intervals, highlights the latest coverage and new subjects.)
Please call, fax, or write for additional information or tearsheets of published work (both photography and writing).
