Railroad locations are often referred to by the names of nearby geographic features. But, there are also locations which have been named either by the railroads or railfans.
With the exception of highly specialized or detailed cartography, you typically will not find these locations on maps.
In fact, unless you are familiar with the railroad in question, the part of the country, or both, you may not even know which maps to look on. You may know that the location is "somewhere out West" or somewhere in the East, but not know just where.
To make matters worse, railfan publications often assume that their readers are familiar with these locations, using only the name for a particular route, yard, or historic spot—without specifying the actual location.
This compilation contains an alphabetic listing of some of the more famous North American locations, with an indication of the actual geographic location, the railroad or railroads involved, as well as brief notes about the location. It does not claim to be a comprehensive listing of all such locations. ....
