European trip scheduled for May, 2000; will focus on Austria, Germany, Switzerland

Plans are still flexible and can be adjusted to meet specific needs in the area

I am planning a stock photo shooting trip in Europe for late May of 2000. At this time details of the trip are still open, and I'm willing to adjust my itinerary for specific interests or needs.

However, if you have such requests, you need to contact me as soon as possible, as I intend to book accommodations and travel by the end of January to get advantageous rates.

Current plans call for a trip of approximately ten to twelve days, flying into and returning from Munich, Germany, with most of the time to be spent in western Austria. In Austria, the focus will be on Salzburg and scenic areas to the west, including areas around Innsbruck and from Innsbruck to the Swiss border. Most of my time will be spent updating coverage in areas that I have visited before.

Possibly one or two days would be spent in eastern Switzerland with primary focus on transportation subjects, particularly a new rail line, though I am still weighing my options for that area.

I was born in Austria and still speak and read German fluently.

While Vienna is the undisputed cultural capital of Austria, the region west of Salzburg is the country's most scenic, including both rolling foothills and various ranges of the Alps.

A look at Salzburg and Innsbruck

Salzburg itself, familiar to Americans through the movie, the Sound of Music, is second only to Vienna as a cultural center, with its rich musical heritage. The fortress that overlooks the old center of the city draws tourists year-round. And many of the streets in the old section have changed little since the time when Mozart lived there during his earliest years. (Most of the old section of the city is under historic protection, with laws restricting changes that can be made to buildings.)

Innsbruck , which has hosted two winter Olympics, is the capital of the Tyrol region of Austria, providing easy access to a multitude of scenic mountain valleys. The city is also a gateway to Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, with the German and Italian borders less than an hour away by either train or highway.

Other Austrian coverage

Though the planned year 2000 trip to Austria does not include Vienna, I still have wide ranging coverage of the Austrian capital (and other parts of the country) from previous trips—primarily of subjects that will not change from year to year.

In addition to counting coverage of Austria as one of my stock specialties for many years, I've also written about Austria for a variety of publications and own a range of historic and general reference materials on Austria. If your are interested in a text and photo package, I'll be happy to discuss options and provide a specific proposal.

Happy Holidays and best wishes for the year 2000

Major plans for 2000

In addition to the planned European trip described above, I also have the following planned for the year 2000:

On the Web site

I'm continually updating my Web site (http://www.robl.w1.com). Please stop by to take a look at recent material. The "What's new" page, accessible from the menu on the home page, contains a log of recent updates.

My site now averages more than 5,000 hits per week.

Publication plans

In addition to the book on Web site design and management for professional photographers, mentioned on the preceding page, I also plan to publish in 2000 an updated and expanded third edition of my reference book, America's Classic Railroad Places: A Geographical Dictionary of North American Railroad Locations.

Book project focuses on Web sites for photographers; input from picture editors/researchers welcomed

I have started on a book on designing Web sites, aimed specifically at professional photographers. This self-published book, similar in format to my photo workshop book (Getting Serious About Photography), is tentatively entitled Show Me the Pictures: The Professional Photographer's Web Site Guide.

As with previous book projects, I'm trying to bring together past experience with Web site design and management and my long-time involvement in photography. For this project, I welcome input from picture editors and researchers who have used the Web to search either for specific images or for a photographer with a specific subject expertise.

Please tell me:

  • What features you like or dislike on sites
  • What problems you encounter on sites
  • About particularly good or bad sites

Please note that I am not dealing with large mega sites of major stock photo agencies that can employ resources far beyond those available to individual photographers.

Send me e-mail at ehr@mindspring.com with your comments. Of course, you can comment on my own site, too. Thank you.
