Hello. It's time for another of my occasional updates of new material added to the stock photo collection. I hope you find useful information here.

The Columbia River Gorge and Other West Coast Subjects

This year's major stock photo effort concentrated on West Coast subjects. My file now includes substantial coverage of transportation and travel subjects on both sides of the Columbia River Gorge (between Washington State and Oregon), as well as new material from San Diego and Los Angeles. [Color picture]

As usual, there's emphasis on railroads and related subjects. Here's a look at major new and updated subjects added to the stock file this year:

Columbia River Gorge

Coverage of the Columbia River Gorge includes not only the two major railroads in the area -- Burlington Northern on the north shore and Union Pacific on the south shore -- but also barge traffic on the river. The latter category includes a sequence of a large tow going through the locks at the dam at The Dalles.

Railroad traffic includes a wide range of subjects:

• Container and general merchandise trains.
• On the BN, a double-stack container train carrying solid waste (garbage) from the Seattle area to a landfill in eastern Washington State.
• The Portland section of Amtrak's Empire Builder on BN tracks on the north shore of the Columbia.
• The Mount Hood Railroad, a Hood River, Ore., based shortline that carries tourist traffic but also still works fruit packing plants and lumber mills in the Hood River valley.
• Activity in the busy BN Vancouver, Wash., yard and traffic on the Columbia River bridge.
• The European-built Talgo tilt train at Vancouver, Wash. (during Amtrak trials on the Seattle-Portland route). [The Talgo equipment has since become standard on this route.]

San Diego, Calif.

The primary focus is on the highly successful San Diego Trolley light rail system, but coverage also includes harbor shots and Amtrak "San Diegan" service. Photos include both lineside and high-angle views of the San Diego Trolley trains. [Color picture]

Los Angles, Calif.

Coverage includes Union Station, which is again becoming important as a regional transportation hub and the Blue Line light rail system connecting downtown L.A. to Long Beach. Union Station subjects include both interiors and exteriors of the landmark building, now undergoing restoration.

Other West Coast Subjects

The west-coast travel also provided the following other subjects:

• Trucks on a mountainous section of interstate highway in Washington state.
• Roslyn, Wash., (a.k.a. Cicely, Alaska, in the TV series Northern Exposure) during time when filming was not taking place.
• Indian rock paintings at Horsethief Lake State Park in Washington State.

Closer to Home

Subjects closer to home were not overlooked with a variety of North Carolina locations getting new or updated coverage. Though many of these overlap with the transportation category, others are part of general coverage of North Carolina.

North Carolina Zoo

In addition to focusing on the animals, other photos show visitors enjoying the animals. (The emphasis is on showing a modern zoo -- not attempting to fake photos of animals in the wild.)

• The new polar bear exhibit in the recently-opened North American section (with zoo visitors in the foreground).
• Elephants, rhinos, giraffes and other animals in the African section.

Reminders

A quick reminder about my specialties:

• Transportation, particularly railroads, but also including other modes
• North Carolina and Virginia general regional and travel coverage
• Europe, with very strong coverage for Austria but also coverage of France, Germany, Great Britain, and the Netherlands

1995 Plans

Colorado and Wyoming Transportation and Travel

A stock shooting trip tentatively planned for May will focus on the Denver, Colo., area. Among planned coverage:

• Denver's new Denver International Airport (DIA), the newest major airport in the U.S.
• Denver's new light rail transit system.
• Rail traffic on major freight lines in Colorado and Wyoming areas, including Burlington Northern, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, Union Pacific.

If you are interested in any of these subjects or other subjects in either Colorado and southern Wyoming, let me know your specific interests as soon as possible.
