050075 U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta visited Charlotte, N.C., Feb. 22, 2005, as part of an effort to sell the Bush administration's plans to end direct support of Amtrak in favor of matching grants to states that invest in passenger rail.

During the visit, Mineta toured state-owned coaches used on the "Piedmont" passenger trains between Raleigh and Charlotte. Aboard one of these coaches, N.C. Deputy Secretary of Transportation David King (left, whose responsibilities include transit and passenger rail) makes a point to Mineta (right), as Charlotte Mayor Patrick McCrory (center) looks on.
