
970493 Fully deployed thrust reverser on UPS cargo jet (during a ground display). Thrust reversers are used to slow jet aircraft following touchdown. There is a common misconception that thrust reversers reverse jet engines; this is not true, as jet engines can only run in one direction. What the thrust reverser does is redirect the output (or thrust) of the jet engine towards the front. As shown above, the two clam-shell like parts of the thrust reverser block the rearward path of the jet exhaust and direct it toward the front of the aircraft.
