Curious sign, Durham, N.C.

I've always found this sign in my hometown of Durham, N.C. a bit strange--as I consider Amtrak a form of transportation, not a point of interest.

NCRR bridge replacement, Clayton, N.C.

On Feb. 6, 2880, the North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR) replaced a century-old bridge at Clayton, N.C.

The new bridge provides higher train speeds and a higher clearance for road traffic.

For a project overview and additional images, go to the main page of this project.

light rail line starts
revenue service

This is the first light rail transit line in the two Carolinas.

View additional photos of the Lynx light rail system in operation on my page of images of the Lynx system and related subjects, including the Charlotte heritage trolley operation.

That page also contains substantial text describing the system and its development.

Durham, N.C., Judicial Building

Photographed for a major textbook publisher.

Even relatively mundane images, such as this photo, can often illustrate important points in civics, social studies, and geography textbooks.

The client needed this image quickly, and I was able to provide a selection from which to choose.

The client decided to go with the version depicted at right.

Lancaster & Chester

The Lancaster & Chester is a long-established shortline railroad in northern South Carolina, about 30 miles south of Charlotte, N.C., and part of that large city's extended metropolitan area.

The line has a large number of industrial customers--but also some extremely rural sections through undeveloped countryside.

The line even has its own museum, tracing the history of the railroad.

The L&C interchanges with both CSX and Norfolk Southern and has both substantial inbound and outbound traffic.

And, the railroad also does maintenance on privately owned passenger cars and leases out luxury passenger cars that it owns--a subject that I have photographed previously.

October, 2006:

Charlotte, N.C., Lynx light rail system

Charlotte, N.C., is building a 9.6 mile light rail system from the center of the city to the southern outskirts.

The first of the Siemens S70 articulated light rail cars had arrived in Charlotte by the end of October.

The South Corridor line is expected to open in late 2007. Additional rail transit lines in the Charlotte area are under development or consideration.

I have added an entire page of images of the Lynx system and related subjects.

I plan to add additional images as the South Corridor line is completed and beings operations.

New N.C. DOT Rail Division equipment

In September, the N.C. Department of Transportation's Rail Division received its newest passenger rail car, a combine (passenger and baggage space) that will be used on the Amtrak "Piedmont" service. The state owns all equipment used on the Raleigh-Charlotte-Raleigh Piedmont trains. This paint scheme will be applied to other N.C. passenger cars. For more details about the car, click on the image at right.

A September trip to the North Carolina coast added a range of new images to already extensive existing coverage.

Historic New Bern, N.C.

In June, I spent two days updating my photo coverage of New Bern, a town in far eastern North Carolina at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers. This first capital of the state during Colonial and Revolutionary War days, still has a strong focus on its historic past, though the hotels and marinas boast all modern conveniences.

Updated coverage includes the marinas, downtown streets and buildings, Tryon Palace (recreated residence of the Colonial governor), the Firemen's Museum, and other locations.

These and other new images add to many others from New Bern made over a number of years.

June, 2006:

NS/NCRR street running, New Bern, N.C.

The June trip to New Bern also produced images of the Norfolk Southern (NS) street running through downtown New Bern. Street running, where trains use tracks embedded in a street, used to be common in harbor and industrial areas, but is now very rare.

This is the main line of the North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR) between New Bern and Morehead City, a line under long-term lease to NS. More details with the larger version of the image.

Private passenger railcars

An early 2006 photo feature project for Executive Traveler magazine focused on private passenger railcars.

Photos included exteriors and interiors made in both North and South Carolina, including a visit to the shops of the Lancaster & Chester, which specialize in maintaining and rebuilding such cars. Other photos are from a ride aboard the car "Chapel Hill."
