November, 2003: Added new page of images of Railroad construction and maintenance

This page, accessible through the link above, focuses primarily on work done in central North Carolina on the North Carolina Railroad corridor, aimed at improving passenger train speeds and general track capacity.

July, 2003: New passenger station, Burlington, NC

In July, one of North Carolina's oldest railroad buildings also became the state's newest passenger station.

The one-time engine house of the North Carolina railroad has been renovated and converted into a passenger station. The shell of the building dates back to 1868.

The photo shows the southbound Amtrak "Carolinian" arriving at the new station.

June, 2003: Research Triangle Park Architecture project: Paradigm Genetics

I have begun a self-directed project to generate stock photos showing some of the architecture of high-tech companies in Research Triangle Park (RTP), N.C.

As this project grows, it will ultimately get its own page of sample images. The images at right and below of Paradigm Genetics are from the first shoot for this project.

Architecture project:
GlaxoSmithKline

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies. It has an extensive campus in Research Triangle Park, with many of the buildings tracing their origin back to individual pre- merger companies that ultimately made up GSK.

The photos to the right and left are of GSK's Girolami Research Building.

The images are part of my ongoing project to photograph the architecture of the buildings used by high-tech companies in Research Triangle Park.

Trolley

Charlotte, N.C., operates a heritage trolley on an upgraded former freight railroad corridor that will ultimately see light rail commuter service.

The corridor was rebuilt to modern light rail standards with overhead wire, welded rail, and concrete ties. When light rail service begins, the line will be double tracked. At that point, the heritage trolley will share the same tracks with the light rail operation.

2002 saw a large amount of railroad related construction work in North Carolina, ranging from rehabilitation of passenger stations to track and signal work. Though some projects were completed in 2002, others were continuing in 2003. I am continuing to document these projects.
