940692 The back end of this mile-long Burlington Northern merchandise train is still leaving Wishram, Wash., while the front end has just entered the state of Oregon, after crossing Lake Celilo, formed by the dammed-up Columbia River. The train is headed south into central Oregon on the former Oregon Trunk line. A brisk wind is leaving whitecaps on the water. This unusual bridge contains both a swing span (out of service, in the foreground) and a lift span (between the two towers) to facilitate the passage of barge traffic on the Columbia.
