Within my main specialties of photography of transportation and travel subjects—and my efforts to provide stock photo coverage of specific geographic regions—I have also often photographed buildings and other structures.

While I do not consider myself an architectural specialist, I can produce images that show structures in their environmental context. And, many of these images have been published in a range of media, ranging from maps and atlases to books and magazines of all kinds.

The selection images shown here overlaps with the pages providing samples of geographic coverage for specific areas.

Structures in context

From coastal lighthouses to urban buildings in the hearts of major American and European cities, I've photographed structures, particularly to show them in the context of their surrounding environment.

No, I don't just photograph railroad stations, though I have photographed many of those. And, as the images on this page show, I find both modern and older buildings equally appealing.

In architectural photography the selection of a viewpoint can be as important as the selection of the subject matter.

Interiors

For many buildings, the most distinctive aspects are on the inside. With a combination of existing and supplemental lighting, I can show these aspects of the buildings.

Lighting for location work

My lighting equipment (and other photo equipment) is specifically selected for portability. For situations where mobility is absolutely essential, I have small but sophisticated battery-powered portable lighting. For more complex situations that require lighting an entire room, my portable studio lighting equipment can handle a range of challenging situations. (My lighting equipment can be quickly set up or be broken down on location.)

Scale models, too

As someone with a lifelong interest in model railroading, and as someone who has photographed realistic layouts for model railroad magazines, I have an understanding of what it takes to photograph scale models. Particularly with models of transportation-related subjects, I am aware of what aspects of the model are important and how to show those in my photographs.

What's your project?

Whether you are looking for exterior, interior, or scale model images—or a combination of the preceding categories—to tell your story, I am always aware that the pictures do need to tell a story. By understanding what you need to depict with images, I can help you to find appropriate stock images from my extensive files or to produce images specific to your needs.
