McAdams Family Farm, Efland, NC

In 2005, I spent a day with the McAdams family of Efland, documenting events on their family farm.

I also visited the family's sales location at the Carrboro, N.C., Farmers' Market.

This was an assignment for Farm & Ranch Living Magazine.

People and photojournalism

While I am best known for my photography of transportation and travel subjects—things and places—I have also long photographed people in their environment, both as parts of my transportation and travel coverage and for other projects. This page contains a few examples of people photos made over the years.

Early photojournalism

I started out in photojournalism—daily news coverage for newspapers and the news service United Press International—and my work as a military information specialist also involved news coverage. Much of my early photography focused almost exclusively on people.

In fact, when a large German newspaper ran a reader poll of the type of news photo that readers liked best, the winner was a people photo that I had made for UPI—a white North Carolina state trooper tenderly carrying a black child. (The photo resulted from a racial disturbance during which a curfew had been imposed. The child was in a car that was stopped for a curfew violation.)

I haven't turned my back on my journalistic roots and still consider most of the work that I do photojournalism.

Lighting for location work

My lighting equipment (and other photo equipment) is specifically selected for portability. For situations where mobility is absolutely essential, I have small but sophisticated battery-powered portable lighting. For more complex situations that require lighting an entire room, including location portraiture with a little less deadline pressure, my portable studio lighting equipment can handle a range of challenging situations. (My lighting equipment can be quickly set up or be broken down on location.)
