Ernest H. Robl stock photos: Vietnam (1969-1970)

The images below were made in 1969 and 1970 while I was serving in the U.S. Army. My stock photo collection contains approximately 1,200 images from that location and time. For a longer verbal description of the range of subjects available from that time, click here.

700350 Cultural contrasts: In downtown DaNang, a Vietnamese woman carries her belongings on a bamboo pole while US troops roar by in a two and a half ton truck. (This is my favorite photo from my time in Vietnam.)

700229 (left) and 700228 (right) U.S. Marine Corps combat artists at work, Da Nang Press Center, Da Nang, Vietnam, 1970. These marines went out into the field with Marine Corps units, where they make sketches and photographs. Later, back at their base, these images were turned into paintings that were shipped back to U.S. facilities, including the Pentagon.

Train Trip

The restoration of the railroad line between Saigon and Hanoi has been featured in magazines and on a variety of television programs recently. The current through train operates under the name "Unification Express." I traveled on a segment of this line between DaNang and Hue in early 1970, when the line operated with a combination new US-built diesel locomotives and other rolling stock dating back to the French colonial era. Lighter moments

700025 Life wasn't always completely serious in Vietnam. This gag photo of our Army public relations unit was made at Camp Hochmuth, Phu Bai, Vietnam, in early 1970, shortly before our unit moved to DaNang.
