Vietnam Train Trip, 1970

The restoration of the railroad line between Saigon and Hanoi has been featured in magazines and on a variety of television programs recently. The current through train operates under the name "Unification Express." I traveled on a segment of this line between Da Nang and Hue in early 1970, when the line operated with a combination new US-built diesel locomotives and other rolling stock dating back to the French colonial era.

I wrote about this trip in an illustrated article in the May, 1974, issue of the magazine Rail Classics, which reproduced my photos in black and white only. (All my photos from the trip are color transparencies.) Based on reading and viewing recent reports on this line, very little has changed in the nearly 30 years since I rode the line.
