Now available from Ernest H. Robl:Understanding Intermodal By Ernest H. Robl
|
This book was produced largely in response to requests from the many visitors to the Intermodal Container FAQ page on my site. Many people, ranging from corporate trainers to college instructors, asked for a printed version of this extensive document. However, this book covers much more ground, going well beyond ISO containers. The book, organized differently from the original document, also examines the concepts behind each type of equipment.
Included
Chapters on topics not included in the Intermodal Container FAQ page:
- The basic concepts that make intermodal transportation a logical choice
- Specialized application of intermodal, including hauling trash to landfills
- Aftermarket container use and why there are surplus containers available
- European "rolling highway" trains and roll-on, roll-off transport ships
- RoadRailer® equipment
- Railroad intermodal cars
- Why Malcom McLean is considered the founder of global intermodal transportation
- Aircraft containers
- Modeling intermodal equipment and facilities as a hobby or for educational purposes
- Where intermodal needs to go now (commentary)
A glossary covers important transportation and logistics terminology.
The book even looks at post 9/11 concerns about container security and what U.S. Customs is doing this area.
