001025 RoadRailer® train on the Brenner line from Innsbruck, Austria, to Italy. RoadRailer is an American-developed concept that has found acceptance on railroads of several continents. RoadRailers are special trailers that can be coupled together into railroad trains - without having to be loaded onto railroad flatcars.

RoadRailer trains provide an efficient method of moving a large number of loaded trailers, without having to take along the highway tractor, as is the case on some European intermodal trains - and using only a small train crew.

This concept is particularly suited for Europe, where tight clearances on railroad lines as well as overhead catenary wires often make the loading of tall trailers on flatcars either impossible or impractical.

This train is operated by the Bayerische Trailerzug company (BTZ or Bavarian Trailer Train in English). The railroads of Germany, Austria, and Italy simply provide the tracks and motive power.
