Norfolk Southern 999 Battery Locomotive Overview

Norfolk Southern calls this experimental locomotive a BP4, standing for battery power, four axles. This locomotive contains no prime mover (combustion engine). Instead, its insides are filled with large industrial batteries. The locomotive is plugged in at a charging station and then operates off its batteries.

The prototype locomotive is designed primarily for switching services in environments where engine exhaust is a particular problem.

The locomotive was photographed while on display during a railroad conference in Raleigh, N.C., in 2010.
