001240 With a symbol of modern business, the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank tower, as a background, this statue, "The Headman," on the shore of the James River in Richmond, Va., reminds visitors of an earlier form of commerce in the area--riverboat traffic.
The statue is in the Brown's Island section of Canal Walk, a park that follows the shore of the James River. It particularly commemorates the role of African-Americans as skilled boatmen in the early days of commerce in the Richmond area.
