080013 Replacement of century-old bridge on the North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR) main line near Clayton, N.C., Feb. 6, 2008; photo 1 (of this sequence of sample images):

The welded track on the main line has been cut and the panel of track on the old span--the dark horizontal band at lower left, behind the crane--is being lifted off. The new span's cross section (with safety walkways on either side of the "track pan" that will hold the ballast and rails) is clearly visible in the foreground at lower center.
