080070 Replacement of century-old bridge on the North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR) main line near Clayton, N.C., Feb. 6, 2008; photo 6 (of this sequence of sample images):

The next day (Feb. 7, 2008): Amtrak 80, the northbound (though eastbound at this point) Carolinian (Charlotte, N.C. to New York City), slowly makes its way over the new bridge and track--the first train on the line since the installation of the new bridge. The train had been held until initial tamping of the ballast could be completed.

Some further fine-tuning of the track and roadway still remains, but the route over the bridge is now passable again.

At this point, the road beneath the bridge is still closed to traffic, which is why a contractor's truck is parked in the middle of the road. A mini-excavator cleans debris out of the drainage ditches of the road.
