990483 Highway trailers on articulated multi-purpose spine cars. These cars are capable of carrying either trailers, or, with the trailer hitches retracted, intermodal containers. To save tare weight, spine cars do not have a continuous deck. Rather, they have a surface area only in the location where trailer wheels would rest. As different size trailers can be carried, there may still be deck areas that are not occupied by wheels.
