This page is a compilation of some of my favorite railroad photos from a variety of locations and made over a number of years.

The page also illustrates the variety of railroad related subjects that I have photographed and continue to photograph.

Though most of my photography focuses on contemporary railroad operations and rail transit, I am also fascinated by preserved historic equipment, particularly if it is still in operable condition.

Europe is far ahead of the United States in high-speed passenger rail. France had its first true high-speed trains by the early 1980s.

Germany was only a few years behind.

And, the European high-speed passenger rail network keeps growing.

Operating high-speed passenger rail requires investment in dedicated infrastructure.

 

Getting freight across the country is not simple. It takes a lot of horsepower and effort to get heavy freight trains over major grades, such as this climb up the front range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.

When I get a chance, I also photograph the small details of railroading, all of which are important to keeping railroads going.

I often try to show the same scene from two different vantage points, in this case, the train in the scenery and the scenery from the train. While these two images, made two years apart, are not at precisely the same location, they are at locations less than a dozen miles apart.
