000601 Innsbruck, Austria: Golden roof (Goldenes Dachl) an Innsbruck landmark.
Legend has it that a 1500s nobleman, tired of being ridiculed for his lack of money, covered the roof with gold to show that he wasn't as poor as people thought. That legend has generally been disproven and the gold roof is now believed to date from the time of the Habsburg Empire.
The original gold is, of course, long gone but the appearance is maintained with fresh coats of gold-colored paint from time to time.
