runs one of Austria's most scenic rail routes. Yet most of the visitors who travel between those two cities by train never see this region. Why? Because two rail routes run between those two must-see Austrian cities, and most visitors (and most Austrians, too) take the flatter, straighter, and therefore faster route. That fast route takes a shortcut through a corner of Germany.
On the other hand, the so-called "All-Austrian" route follows twisting mountain valleys. Traveling this route takes about an hour (or more) longer than the fast route, but the scenery more than makes up for the longer trip. Only a few trains per day run the entire route. In addition to the few through trains, there are shuttle trains that cover only parts of the trip. But, these trains are scheduled for simple connections at the points where the trains meet.
Another advantage of the scenic route is that its trains consist mostly of older equipment on which you can still open the windows. All of the following photos were made from a train on this route, going east from Innsbruck towards Salzburg.
