This track segment is part of the North Carolina Railroad Company line stretching from Morehead City on the coast to Charlotte, N.C. The line, operated by Norfolk Southern under an access agreement, also carries Amtrak trains. Track and signal improvements funded by the the state are aimed largely at providing faster passenger service.
