030080 The new foundation (foreground) is almost ready for the move of the historic Hamlet, N.C., station to its new location in this February 13, 2003, photo. In the move, planned for spring of 2003, the station will cross the east-west tracks where a CSX coal train is currently headed east. The station will also be turned about 90 degrees so that the station's circular tower still faces the intersection of east-west and north south tracks.
The station is being moved to provide better access and a better tie-in to Hamlet's downtown historic district. At the new location, the station will again serve travelers on Amtrak trains. However, with a surrounding park, the station will also provide a place for visitors to watch train traffic.
Access to the old location proved problematic because travelers and visitors had to cross active CSX tracks to reach the building.
