030411 Charlotte (N.C.) Trolley car 85 heads south along the upgraded southern transit corridor, with the downtown Charlotte skyline in the background. The heritage trolley operation is using a former freight rail line that has been rebuilt to contemporary light rail standards in anticipation of future light rail commuter service on this south corridor line.

The line has been equipped with concrete ties and welded rail, as well as modern crossings for streets. Charlotte's downtown skyline is visible in the distance.

Operation of the trolley and the anticipation of light rail service has already drawn considerable economic development along this corridor.

The heritage trolley operation will continue to operate when light rail service begins, sharing the same tracks. At that point, the line will be double-tracked.
