With both a large Army base, Fort Bragg, and a large Air Force Base, Pope, and major Veterans hospital, Fayetteville puts on the most elaborate Memorial Day Parade in the state. The parade stretches for miles, with both active military, retiree, and school groups participating.

The 2003 parade also provided the last major event in Fayetteville's two-week-long Festival of Flight, marking the centennial of the Wright Brothers' first powered flight in North Carolina. The festival was held in Fayetteville, rather than on the coast where the flight took place, because Fayetteville has both a larger population base, the large military bases, and more extensive display facilities.
