030777 A dredge has just taken another bite out of the shipping channel bottom in the Cape Fear River at Wilmington, N.C. Deepening the channel will allow larger and more heavily loaded ships to operate in and out of the North Carolina State Port at Wilmington. The channel deepening project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2003.

The project is being supervised by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The photo was made from a small vessel belonging to the Corps.
