040072 Amtrak train 80, the northbound "Carolinian" crossing NC highway 54 near Research Triangle Park, N.C., in April of 2004. This bridge, built in 1927, is a major bottleneck on the highway during morning and evening rush hours. (Ironically, the often busy highway was empty at the time this photo was made.)
Preparations for a new bridge which will allow the highway to be widened and which will also allow faster train speeds are visible in the background. The new bridge, scheduled for completion in 2005, will have space for two tracks and also have provisions for an adjoining bridge for the planned Triangle Transit Authority (TTA) regional rail system's tracks. A major TTA station serving the Research Triangle Park is planned near this location.
