040243 Looking west at Funston, N.C., a railroad siding west of Durham, N.C., at sunset. Both tracks at this location (the main line at left and the siding at right) were completely rebuilt in 2003-2004.
These tracks are part of the North Carolina Railroad corridor, which stretches from Morehead City on the coast to Charlotte in the south of the state. The right of way is owned by the North Carolina Railroad Co., a corporation whose voting stock is held by the state. The tracks are under long-term lease to freight railroad Norfolk Southern but also see four Amtrak passenger trains per day.
