050442 Heavy military vehicles returning from Iraq are being driven off a roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) military transport ship, the Cape Wrath, at the N.C. State Port of Wilmington. RoRo ships are essentially large parking garages built into a ship. These ships have their own extendable loading and unloading ramps and can therefore use almost any type of docking space. Most of the vehicles unloaded from this ship were loaded onto railcars for transport to inland destinations.
The N.C. State Ports do a substantial amount of military business, not only for units based in North Carolina but also for military units all over the country.
The Cape Wrath is a reserve vessel that was activated in support of the war in Iraq.
