030159 A railroad contractor's hi-rail rig is setting out new ties during track renewal east of Selma, N.C. on the North Carolina Railroad. The NCRR is a state-owned railroad dispatched and operated by freight railroad Norfolk Southern.
Hi-rail vehicles are highway vehicles that have retractable railroad wheels that also allow them to operate on track. This vehicle is essentially a pulpwood truck adapted for railroad work. This rig has been adapted for one-person operation. The operate can move the vehicle forward while positioned atop the grapple column. A small rail-only trailer supplements the carrying capacity. For road travel, the trailer can be loaded on truck with the grapple arm.
