031011 While many railroad construction and maintenance machines operate on railroad track, other types of machines, such as bulldozers and front-end loaders are also important for both track construction and maintenance. When operated carefully, these machines can climb over track without causing damage. In this case, a bulldozer is climbing over track to reach the other side, where it will remove an obsolete switch and then pull the remaining track into a new alignment. This work is being done at the extended Funston siding just west of Durham, N.C., on the state-owned North Carolina Railroad. That railroad is operated by Norfolk Southern. A variety of track and alignment improvements were made on this line in 2002 and 2003 to increase capacity and to provide faster operating speeds for passenger trains. A major portion of these improvements were paid for by state funds.
