031021 Tamper compacting gravel ballast under newly laid track. The vibrating heads on a tamper allow newly laid track to be raised above the gravel ballast, allowing good drainage while providing firm support for the track itself. Notice how the track is pulled slightly upward by the clamp to the right of the tamper heads. Tampers also provide a level trackbed on straight sections or appropriate superelevation on curves.
