031035 In mid-October of 2003, a northbound (geographically eastbound at this point) Amtrak "Carolinian" train passes a track construction site at Funston, just west of Durham, N.C. The conductor in the first car is checking out progress while the train moves slowly through the work site.
Though this location on the North Carolina Railroad (operated by freight railroad Norfolk Southern) has long had a passing siding, in 2003, major work was done here to extend the length of the siding and change track alignment to provide higher train speeds. Most of the work was paid for by state funds.
The track in the foreground is the new main line, not yet ballasted. The passenger train is on the old main line, which became the Funston siding after activation of the new track.
